"Our Song" is a single by country pop artist Taylor Swift. It was released to radio on August 22, 2007, as the third single from her quadruple[citation needed] platinum self-titled debut album, Taylor Swift. The song became Swift's first number-one on the country chart in December 2007, also making her the youngest artist to be the sole writer of a number-one country song.[1][2]
Swift wrote the song for a ninth grade talent show.[3] Swift said on her MySpace page that it was released because of the large reaction it gets from fans at her shows and online. She also stated it was one of her best-selling songs on iTunes.[4]
The song was released as the second single from the album Fearless in Italy in 2009.

Song Information

According to Swift, she sat down with her guitar one day and "got in a groove." She wanted to write a song about how music affects people. The last part of the chorus is, "And when I got home before I said amen askin' God if He would play it again." Swift commented on this saying, "I wanted it to be last on the album, because the last line of the chorus is `play it again'. Let's hope people take it as a hint to go ahead and play the album again." The song talks about her relationship with then boyfriend Drew Dunlap. According to Swift, "We had a strong relationship and we had a lot of fun those years, and we still do, but we are just friends now".
The song is written in the key of D major, set in common time. The chord progression for the entire song except the bridge is D-Em7-G-A.

Music Video

The video for "Our Song" was directed by Trey Fanjoy and premiered on Country Music Television in September 2007.[6] It reached #1 on CMT's Top Twenty Countdown on November 22, 2007, and remained there for four weeks.[7] It then reached the top spot once again on January 17, 2008. The video won the 2008 CMT Music Awards Video of the Year award. The video has been watched more than 29 million times on YouTube. The music video starts with Swift talked in the phone with her friend, and the first chorus she sing the song while wearing a blue dress party in front of her house. In the next chorus, she sing the song in two scenes, in a room with her band and in a place covered with many of gift and roses. The music video ends with her face is zoomed out by the camera.

Chart Performance

On the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated for the week ending September 2, 2007, "Our Song" debuted at number 55. The song reached number one for the chart week ending December 22, 2007, when it moved up from the number six position. The five-notch jump to number one was the biggest on the Hot Country Songs chart since January 1998, when Tim McGraw's "Just to See You Smile" moved up from six to one.[8]
With six weeks at number one, "Our Song" forged a four-way tie for the second-longest running number one by a female artist in the history of the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Other songs also spending six weeks atop the chart are "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" by Kitty Wells (in August 1952), "Breathe" by Faith Hill (January 2000) and "Jesus, Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood (February 2006). Only Connie Smith's "Once a Day" had a longer reign, accomplishing its feat in January 1965.[citation needed]
"Our Song" eventually became a crossover hit, becoming Swift's second Top 20 entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The song eventually peaked at number 16.
